I am so happy you have chosen to worship with us today! Although it is not a typical Sunday, we are glad you are here; your presence makes it even better. We have a guest speaker from Gideons International who will share about their work.
The video today is a tribute to the IMB missionaries who not only dedicated their lives to missions but also lost their lives on the mission field. Two of these missionaries were Larry and Jean Elliott. I learned about their story because the Elliotts had served at the same church where my husband and I served in Raleigh, NC. Their loss was personal to many of our church members.
Even though I had never met them, I felt a link to this couple. The Elliotts had served with IMB in Honduras for over 25 years when they felt God was calling them to serve in the Middle East. In early 2004, the Elliotts left for Baghdad. A month later, Larry and Jean Elliott were killed in a drive-by shooting, along with two other missionaries. They had been sent to assist with water purification, which was Larry’s area of expertise.
I hope learning about Larry and Jean helps bring the names on the screen to life. Not everyone who answers the call gets to return to their earthly homes, but what a heavenly homecoming they must have received.
