Building Other Up in Worship | 1 Corinthians 14:1-5

1. Pursue love (v.1a)

1 Pursue love

Romans 12:9-10: 9 Let love be genuine. Abhor what  is evil; hold fast to what is good. 10 Love one another  with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.

2. Prize clear communication (v.1b-3)

and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that  you may prophesy. 2 For one who speaks in a tongue  speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands  him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit. 3 On the other  hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people for their  upbuilding and encouragement and consolation.

Nehemiah 8:8: They read from the book, from the  Law of God, clearly, and they gave the sense, so that  the people understood the reading.

Colossians 4:3-4: 3 At the same time, pray also for  us, that God may open to us a door for the word, to  declare the mystery of Christ, on account of which I

am in prison— 4 that I may make it clear, which is  how I ought to speak.

3. Prioritize edification (v.4-5)

4 The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but  the one who prophesies builds up the church. 5 Now I  want you all to speak in tongues, but even more to  prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the  one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets,  so that the church may be built up.

Romans 15:2-3: 2 Let each of us please his neighbor  for his good, to build him up. 3 For Christ did not  please himself, but as it is written, “The reproaches  of those who reproached you fell on me.”

1. Look for someone to encourage

1 Thessalonians 5:9-11: 9 For God has not destined  us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our  Lord Jesus Christ, 10 who died for us so that whether  we are awake or asleep we might live with him.  11 Therefore encourage one another and build one  another up, just as you are doing.

2. Use your gift to serve OTHERS

1 Peter 4:10: As each has received a gift, use it to  serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied  grace:

3. Speak words that build people up

Ephesians 4:29: Let no corrupting talk come out of  your mouths, but only such as is good for building  up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to  those who hear.

4. Put the good of others ahead of your preferences

Philippians 2:3-4: 3 Do nothing from selfish  ambition or conceit, but in humility count others  more significant than yourselves. 4 Let each of you  look not only to his own interests, but also to the  interests of others.
