Satisfaction in Contentment | 1 Corinthians 7:17-24

I want to give you three areas of our lives in which we need to strive to be content:

1. Be content with your present situation (v.17-20)

17 Only let each person lead the life that the Lord has  assigned to him, and to which God has called him. This is  my rule in all the churches.

Psalm 37:3-5: 3 Trust in the Lord, and do good;  dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness. 4 Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the  desires of your heart. 5 Commit your way to the  Lord; trust in him, and he will act.

18 Was anyone at the time of his call already  circumcised? Let him not seek to remove the marks of  circumcision. Was anyone at the time of his call  uncircumcised? Let him not seek circumcision. 19 For  neither circumcision counts for anything nor  uncircumcision, but keeping the commandments of God. 20 Each one should remain in the condition in which he  was called.

Philippians 4:11-12: 11 Not that I am speaking of  being in need, for I have learned in whatever  situation I am to be content. 12 I know how to be  brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and  every circumstance, I have learned the secret of  facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need.

1 Timothy:6-6-8: 6 Now there is great gain in  godliness with contentment, 7 for we brought  nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything  out of the world. 8 But if we have food and clothing,  with these we will be content.

2. Be content with your social status (v.21-23)

21 Were you a bondservant when called? Do not be  concerned about it. (But if you can gain your freedom,  avail yourself of the opportunity.) 22 For he who was  called in the Lord as a bondservant is a freedman of the  Lord. Likewise he who was free when called is a  bondservant of Christ. 23 You were bought with a price;  do not become bondservants of men.

1. The approval of others

Galatians 1:10: For am I now seeking the approval of  man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I  were still trying to please man, I would not be a  servant of Christ.

2. Money and Materialism

Matthew 6:24: No one can serve two masters, for  either he will hate the one and love the other, or he

will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You  cannot serve God and money.

3. Success and Career Ambition

Colossians 3:23-24: 23 Whatever you do, work  heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the  inheritance as your reward. You are serving the  Lord Christ.

4. Fear and Cultural Pressure

2 Timothy 1:7: For God gave us a spirit not of fear  but of power and love and self-control.

3. Be content with God Himself (v.24)

24 So, brothers, in whatever condition each was called, there let him remain with God.

1. Deepen you commitment to Jesus to find true satisfaction and commitment

2. Pursue God with what he has for you now, not when

3. Ask yourself, “What am I running from” or “What  am I afraid of?”
