How To Stop Worrying | Matthew 6:25-34

Sermon Recap

Are you feeling overwhelmed by fear, worry, and anxiety? You are not alone. In this post, I’m going to highlight the common struggles that many of us face, such as financial stress, health concerns, and uncertainty about the future. Looking at Matthew 6:25-34, we’re going to explore the concept of God's providence and offers practical ways to overcome anxiety.

The Transformation: From Fear to Love

My 5 year old son had a fear of swimming. Initially terrified of the water, my son eventually developed a love for swimming over time. This transformation serves as a powerful metaphor for how we can overcome our own fears and anxieties. Just as John David learned to love swimming, we too can learn to trust in God's providence and live free from worry.

The Common Struggles We Face

Many people today are plagued by anxiety disorders, particularly in the United States where such conditions are highly prevalent. The rise in technology and decrease in play-based childhood have contributed to increased anxiety, especially among younger generations. Financial stress, health concerns, and an uncertain future often exacerbate these feelings.

God's Providence: A Solution to Overcome Anxiety

God's providence is the belief that God is actively involved in providing for our needs. We do not need to be anxious about basic necessities like food, water, and clothing because Jesus promises to provide for his followers.

The Example of Birds and Flowers

Jesus tells us that birds and flowers are cared for by God. Birds do not plant or harvest, yet they are fed. Flowers do not toil or spin, yet they are clothed in splendor. If God provides for birds and flowers, how much more will He provide for us?

The Three Truths to Help Overcome Fear and Worry

  1. God's Authority Over Circumstances

God has authority over all circumstances. Whether you are dealing with financial stress, health issues, or uncertainty about the future, remember that God's authority surpasses all these challenges. His divine plan is far greater than our temporary concerns.

2. The Futility of Worry

Worrying does not add a single hour to our lives. In fact, it often diminishes our quality of life, affecting both our mental and physical well-being. We need to ecognize worry as a sin that can particularly impact Christians, diminishing our faith and trust in God.

3. Seeking God's Kingdom First

Instead of focusing on our own anxieties, we should prioritize our relationship with God. By surrendering control of our lives to Him, we open ourselves up to His divine care and provision.

Practical Steps to Stop Worrying

So how can we put these truths into practice? Here are some practical steps to guide us in our journey towards peace and trust in God.

  1. Take Worries to God in Prayer

Pour out your anxieties and concerns to Him. He is always ready to listen and provide comfort.

2. Surrender Control

Trust that God is in charge and has a plan for you. This act of surrender can bring immense relief and peace.

3. Focus on God's Past Provisions

Reflect on times when God has provided for you in the past. This can serve as a powerful reminder of His faithfulness and encourage you to trust Him with your present and future needs.

4. Surround Yourself with a Community of Believers

Being part of a community of believers can provide immense support. Share your struggles with trusted friends and family members who can offer encouragement and pray for you.

5. Trust in God's Character

Finally, trust in God's character. He is loving, faithful, and just. Remind yourself of these attributes and let them reassure you in times of doubt and fear.

Conclusion: Replacing Worry with Faith

In conclusion, we have a need to replace worry with faith in God. Given God's authority over circumstances and His promise to provide, we can find peace amidst our anxieties. By seeking God's kingdom first and surrendering control of our lives to Him, we can overcome our fears and live with a sense of security and trust.

Lord, help us deal with our anxieties and to instill a strong faith in Your divine providence. Let us take these steps to heart, trusting in Your care and provision every day. By embracing these truths and practical steps, we can stop worrying and begin to truly experience God's peace and provision. Let us learn to trust in His divine plan and live free from the burden of anxiety.
