Good morning everyone. I thank you all for coming to worship this morning. especially on this special, busy holiday weekend. It never crossed my mind fifty years ago as a high school senior during the bicentennial that I would also be around for America's two hundred and fiftieth celebration. Our nation is a picture of The Lord's grace and mercy. Today we close this sermon series on Freedom in Christ, learning from the Apostle Paul's teaching on Christian Liberty. This section of Scripture is often discussed and even debated because we tend to lose sight of the purpose of our personal freedom in Christ - it's not about us but the well-being of others and ultimately the glory of God. Baptism, while not a saving action, is a key profession of one's faith by which Jesus has commanded people to participate. It is the entrance into Christ's church and a necessary spiritual marker for one's faith.
We are also continuing our sermon series on Freedom in Christ as we look at the Trap of Idolatry. Idolatry, that of worshiping and revering something other than God, is a sin that can slowly creep into our lives if we are unaware of the trap. Today we'll see what exactly we should avoid so that we do not find ourselves in spiritual captivity.
