The Complacency Trap | 1 Corinthians 10:1-13

1. Don’t disregard the blessings you have in Christ (v.1-5)

1 For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our  fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through  the sea, 2 and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud  and in the sea, 3 and all ate the same spiritual food, 4 and  all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from  the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was  Christ. 5 Nevertheless, with most of them God was not  pleased, for they were overthrownin the wilderness.

1. Give thanks to God on a daily basis

Psalm 103:1-2: 1 Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all  that is within me, bless his holy name! 2 Bless the  Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits,

2. Depend on God on a daily basis

John 15:5: I am the vine; you are the branches.  Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that  bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do  nothing.

3. Examine your heart on a daily basis

2 Corinthians 13:5: Examine yourselves, to see  whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do  you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus  Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the  test!

2. Don’t disregard the examples you have in the Word

6 Now these things took place as examples for us, that we  might not desire evil as they did. 7 Do not be idolaters as  some of them were; as it is written, “The people sat down  to eat and drink and rose up to play.” 8 We must not  indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did, and  twenty-three thousand fell in a single day. 9 We must not  put Christto the test, as some of them did and were  destroyed by serpents, 10 nor grumble, as some of them  did and were destroyed by the Destroyer. 11 Now these  things happened to them as an example, but they were  written down for our instruction, on whom the end of  the ages has come.

3. Don’t disregard the provisions you have in God  (v.12-13)

12 Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take  heed lest he fall. 13 No temptation has overtaken you that  is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let  you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the  temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that  you may be able to endure it.

1. Your temptations are common

Hebrews 4:15: For we do not have a high priest who  is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but  one who in every respect has been tempted as we  are, yet without sin.

2. Trust in God’s faithfulness, not your own strength

2 Thessalonians 3:3: But the Lord is faithful. He will  establish you and guard you against the evil one

3. Look for a way of escape

Proverbs 4:26-27: 26 Ponder the path of your feet;  then all your ways will be sure. 27 Do not swerve to  the right or to the left; turn your foot away from evil.
