Order Under Christ | 1 Corinthians 11:2-16

1. There is proper authority in creation (v.2-3)

2 Now I commend you because you remember me in  everything and maintain the traditions even as I  delivered them to you. 3 But I want you to understand  that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is  her husband, and the head of Christ is God.

John 6:38: For I have come down from heaven, not  to do my own will but the will of him who sent me.

2. There is proper order in worship (v.4-10)

4 Every man who prays or prophesies with his head  covered dishonors his head, 5 but every wife who prays  or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her  head, since it is the same as if her head were shaven.  6 For if a wife will not cover her head, then she should  cut her hair short. But since it is disgraceful for a wife to  cut off her hair or shave her head, let her cover her head.  7 For a man ought not to cover his head, since he is the  image and glory of God, but woman is the glory of man.

8 For man was not made from woman, but woman from  man. 9 Neither was man created for woman, but woman  for man.

Genesis 2:18: Then the Lord God said, “It is not good  that the man should be alone; I will make him a  helper fit forhim.”

Genesis 2:21-22: 21 So the Lord God caused a deep  sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took  one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh.  22 And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the  man he made into a woman and brought her to the  man.

10 That is why a wife ought to have a symbol of authority  on her head, because of the angels.

1 Peter 1:12: It was revealed to them that they were  serving not themselves but you, in the things that  have now been announced to you through those who  preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit  sent from heaven, things into which angels long to  look.

1. Worship should honor God, not culture

2. Men should model humble leadership in worship

3. Women’s participation in worship should honor God’s created order

4. Realize that our actions reflect our hearts

3. There is proper practice in Christ (v.11-16)

11 Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of  man nor man of woman; 12 for as woman was made from  man, so man is now born of woman. And all things are  from God. 13 Judge for yourselves: is it proper for a wife  to pray to God with her head uncovered? 14 Does not  nature itself teach you that if a man wears long hair it is  a disgrace for him, 15 but if a woman has long hair, it is  her glory? For her hair is given to her for a covering. 16 If  anyone is inclined to be contentious, we have no such  practice, nor do the churches of God.

1. Honor and respect each other in worship

Philippians 2:3-4: 3 Do nothing from selfish  ambition or conceit, but in humility count others  more significant than yourselves. 4 Let each of you  look not only to his own interests, but also to the  interests of others.

2. Honor and respect God in worship

John 4:23-24: 23 But the hour is coming, and is now  here, when the true worshipers will worship the  Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking  such people to worship him. 24 God is spirit, and  those who worship him must worship in spirit and  truth.”

3. Honor and respect God’s created order

1 Corinthians 14:40: But all things should be done decently and in order.
